Best remembered for her bare foot running and that ‘Mary Decker incident’.

Zola was born in South Africa and competed for both Great Britain and South Africa at the Olympic Games, but shot to fame at the tender age of 17 when she broke the women’s 5000m world record in a time of 15.01.83, a time which was not ratified because the race took place in South Africa which still had an apartheid policy in place.
