Weekly Round-up w/e September 29th to October 20th

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process.

Race Result

This weeks addition is covering the last 3 weeks as i’ve been jet setting around the globe….Doncaster…Lincoln and Beverly…all those glamourous places around the UK. There was a little jaunt to Portugal but less said about that said for the better! Anyhow I digress….lets start at the local flat 10km run at Richmond. This tough 10km with plenty long, steep climbs on the course is never a PB course (unless it’s your first ever 10km!). Hollywood Wilkinson was our only runner on the day ‘surviving’ the run in a time of 52:38. Same time next year Steve?

At the Manchester Half marathon we had four of our athletes in action in this flat and fast course…and our boys did not let us down as all of them put in spectacular performances. Tim Taylor was first over the line in 1:16:22 while Nathan Price’s 1:21:31 led home Tom Leighton in 1:22:01 and Jacob Dennis 1:22:03 across the line! Superb gentleman.

We had two of our athletes at the Chester Marathon, a scenic route around the countryside lanes after starting and finishing from the racecourse. Natalie Hiles was the first of our two to finish in an excellent 3:52:20 for a new personal best while Mark Leslie matched that achievement by crossing the line in 4:13:31. Fantastic work guys!

At Sunday’s York Marathon conditions were cool but a little moist for our athletes. This course is predominately flat and fast so ideal for quick times and our athletes didn’t let us down. Andrew Bainbridge smashed his PB with a 2:55:46 putting those younger pretenders in their place 😉 while experienced marathon runner Jamie Baldasera finished his run just outside the 4hr mark with a 4:01:39. Sarah Dent was our third runner finishing her race in an excellent 5:56:12.

In the 10mile race we had five athletes in action, the 10mile race takes on part of the marathon route so a quick downhill first mile looping round the local country lanes and back to the start line. Norbert Wilson was first round in 86:21 while Shirley Gibson was 2nd F75 with her 1:41:51 finish over the distance. Janet Williams supported by Trevor Mitchell finished her race in 1:43:49, Trevor following her across the line while Samantha Wragg finished her race in 1hr 56 dead. Excellent running ladies and gentleman.

Mark Haymer, Hilary Bevan and former club runner Chris Fothergill ran the Wild Deer 53km Ultra race. The 53km circular route starts at Shotley Bridge near Consett in County Durham and takes competitors along the Derwent Walk and Waskerley Way to Waskerley Reservoir, where they head over the moors to Smiddy Shaw Reservoir and Hisehope Reservoir. After crossing the moors there is a short stretch on the road through Muggleswick before picking up footpaths of Derwent Gorge and Muggleswick Woods towards Mosswood. At Shotley Bridge, following the footpath along the river towards Ebchester, Blackhall Mill and crossing over at Hamsterley to pick up the Derwent Walk back to the finish.

In a field of 139 runners, Chris was second place on the day in 4:19:43 while Mark was in 8th in 5:03:05 and Hilary 8:12:42. All tremendous achievements. Just to complete the course is an achievement in itself so big pat on the back!

We had four of our runners involved in the Jarrow 10k, an event partnered with Jarrow and Hebburn Athletics Club which starts and finishes on Monkton Athletics Track sandwiched between two loops on the flat bypass. The race is advertised as flat, fast and holds great pb potential so maybe another to consider next year. The race is split between A & B runners, A race under 40mins and B over. Paul Allan was first home finishing in 34:45 ahead of Paul Gilsenan in 37:12 and Barry Talman 39:35. Dave McKenna, running in the B race finished in 42:22 but 2nd in his age category. Well done lads.

Colin Taylor had to bring a wheelbarrow to the last Darlington Trail series after he scooped up both the 5km and 10km series trophies! Well done Colin, soon you will be heading into that V50 category where more bling no doubt awaits! Top man.
