Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club? Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.
Get Involved
We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.
In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH
Race Result
Thursday saw the final Monthly Mile of the 2024 calendar, another successful series thanks to Trevor and Linda McDermot. This event is very popular and clearly lots of athletes like to give their legs a good blast out over the 1 mile route. Ben Massey was top dog on the night finishing in 5mins 20 while Val Clarke had the highest age grading with a 81.89% figure for her 6min 53 run. Well done everyone who ran or participated in the series in particular the marshals who have provided Trevor and Linda with much needed support.
Mark Milner was in action this weekend at the latest Hardmoors race, the Hardmoors 60….a race which is 63 miles on the coast from Guisborough to Filey. The route of the 63 mile race follows the second half of the Hardmoors 110, along the beautiful Cleveland Coast, through Saltburn, Runswick Bay, Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar, Scarborough and into the finish location, the seaside resort of Filey. Mark finished his 63mile run in 16 hours, 19 mins and 57 seconds for 63rd place. Some boy! well done Mark.

Sunday saw PB hunters heading to Redcar to take on one of the racing opportunities of the Redcar Festival, a number of races from 2km fun run to half marathon around the flat and fast location. With no runners in the 5km it was left to Ted Kerby to bring the Harrier boys and girls home in the 10km race with a time of 38:55 which earned him 15th place while Stephen Dent (43:28) and Norbert Wilson (46:09) made up our top 3. Shirley Gibson was next home in 57:43…not too shabby from our 78 year old club record holder while Brian Thompson finished in 58:40 and Emma Arrowsmith 76:41. Great running everyone.

In the half marathon it was John Clifford who was first of our club runners to finish with an excellent 1:17:47. Tim Taylor was next home in 1:19:36 with Andrew Bainbridge 1:20:54 (a big PB for him). Will Seekins ran an excellent 1:24:53 with Paul Dunne (showing unafiliated) 1:35:18, while Phil Doonan finished his run in 1:38:54 ahead of Martin Jackson who ran a solid 1:42:55 and Iain Girard finished in 1:53:16.
