Weekly Round-Up w/e 7th January

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process)

Race Result

On New Years day the Captain Cook’s Fell race took place, a tough mixed terrain event around 9km in length and over 318m climbing over the distance so a toughie (especially if you’ve had a good New Year’s Eve!). Some top runners rock up for this event each year, which shows what a great run Michael Harcourt put in on the day to finish in 14th place from a field of near 400 people. Great work Michael

We had a handful of our athletes in action at the NEHL Sherman Cup/Davison Shield XC over the weekend in some really tough conditions underfoot. Some terrific results including 3rd and 4th for Matilda and Charlotte Owens in the U15 race and 10th and 16th for Freya Talman and Savannah Tarn in the U17’s. Acer Tarn finished 6th in the U11’s race which brother Donovan and Lucas Rogers finished 8th and 9th respectively in the boys U13 race Chris Fothergill finished 58th in the senior mens race 2 places ahead of Wes Tarn in 60th. Full results for these events can be found here

Sunday also saw the club involved in the latest NYSD Cross Country event at Ormesby Hall. Conditions were muddy as you would expect and there was some terrific results on the day. We are still waiting for results to be released but here’s a few photos of the day.

Away from all of the mud, Rowan Steel was competing in his first indoor competition taking on the 600m’s. Rowan who seems to get better year on year won his race in a super fast 1.32.17 which actually is a club record having a record not set at this event/age group. It will take some beating that’s for sure! Great work Rowan.
