Race Results
Penny Skilton was in action this weekend at the Kielder 32km race hosted by High Terrain Events. The event which stars from Kielder Castle the course follows the same route as the ultra to CP1 at Kielder Dam. The route then returns along the Lakeside Way to re-join the ultra route at Bakethin reservoir. A steady climb back up into the forest is soon followed by a superb descent back to the finish at Kielder Castle. Penny finished her run in 5hrs and 3 minutes and 49 seconds (which actually turned out to be 21.4 miles). Nicely done Penny! Full results can be found here
Steven ‘Hollywood’ Wilkinson and Nicky Young were our only two athletes at the sixteenth Port of Blyth 10km race, a race which is very flat and attracts PB hunters from around the area. Although results have disappeared again from the results we captured Steve finishing under 40mins in 39.48 in 62nd place with Nicky 187th in 46.28 but 4th in her age category and a new personal best to boot. Great work by you both.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road, follow the Yellow Brick Road. Hilary Bevan was our only competitor at the weekends Yellow Brick Road Run, an event which sees runners choosing how many laps they would like to complete to claim one of these fantastic medals. Completing a half marathon on the day, Hilary finished in a time of 2.46.19. Well done Hilary.

Sunday saw the return of the Manchester Marathon, a relatively flat course with a few undulations dotted around (but hardly Gilling West!!). The day started quite cold but the sun made an appearance throughout the day but on the whole good conditions for running. Lewis Moses, starting in the Elite section and who was on pacing duties for his with Gemma finished first in 2:38:54 less than a minute ahead of James Carberry who finished with a new personal best and a sub 2:40 in 2:39:48. Lewis and James will have qualified for a Championship place so watch out for the updated process for 2023!!
Paul Cook was next home in 2:57:44 achieving his target of good for age to get entrance into London marathon for 2 years and shaved a few seconds of Simon Rogers V45 club record (a temporary time until these fast lads get old!!). Catherine Howe and Rachel Emmott both completing their debut marathons (I believe) finished in 3:29:38 and 3:54:07 respectively.

Team Captains
Last season we had a gap in the mens road and xc capacity which Jade Hutchinson covered with aplomb. Wes Tarn has stepped up to be both XC and Road men’s captain taking some of that pressure of Jade who will continue from our ladies teams perspective (Complimenting Karl Murray and Sarah Johnson who subsequently has taken over the ladies Track & Field role from Sue Phillips). Great additions to the teams and people who will continue to do a brilliant job motivating and leading our groups.
We are also looking for Junior captains to support our athletes. We need some further discussions around how this will work but we will communicate more on this soon.
Mark my word….and homework!
Some fantastic news which is now official, our very own Mark Tallon has been appointed Northern athletics competition and events administrator. I have absolute faith that they have appointed the right man for the job and having worked with Mark at the club for the last 7 years know he will absolutely be looking to make some positive changes with NA. All the very best of luck Mark and you have the clubs full support!
Membership Renewals
Seems like the England Athletics system has had a few issues with the volume of users so apologies if you’ve received multiple emails or not being able to log in to re-sign yet (unfortunately we have no control of their system). If you need to re-sign and haven’t had the email yet, you can actually log into the portal and pay through there. Huge thank you to many of you who have re-signed straight away, looking forward to another year of athletics!!
Parkrun Takeover
Don’t forget it’s the clubs parkrun take over this Saturday so don’t forget to come along in your club colours and get involved. Hilary Bevan is still looking for volunteers for the day and would be great to get people of all ages involved. Big thanks to Hilary for organising this.
Awards & Presentation Night 2022
Last but by no means least, the clubs get together evening was a great success and allowed members to finally get back together and celebrate successes over the age groups. With the club championships back on the agenda for this season we will be in a position to combine performances across all the distances as well as rewarding and recognising those who sometimes go unnoticed.
Some fabulous photos of the night taken by Karen Harland can be found here. Huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the nights event either prior to or on the evening. Winners will be circulated via usual comms channels but congratulations to all who were nominated and won an award.
