Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.
How do I?…
- I have a question or want to tell you something
- I want to sign up for an event
- I want to attend a training session
- I want to purchase kit
- I want to claim a club record
- I want to read about our clubs history
- I want to tell our members about our business or see what business they support
- I want to see what discounts are available to me
- I want to read our clubs processes or policies

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club? Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved
We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.
In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Race Result
It was young Dylan Wilson who took top honours at the clubs midweek Monthly Mile race. Dylan romped to victory in a rapid 5min dead on the day looking very comfortable as he crossed the line. Ollie Curran’s 5:07 was good enough for 1st in the age grading run with a 84.98% score! Some excellent performances from our club runners, listed below.
The club would also like to give a Huge shout out to Linda McDermot for stepping up to the plate in the absence of her husband Trevor who had been hospitalised of late after having a heart attack while driving his car. After a worrying period of time I’m glad to report that Trevor is now back home and that everyone at the club is wishing him a speedy recovery but also hoping that Trevor takes a bit of a back seat in the amazing work he does for athletics across our region until he is 100% fit and well. Picture below of Trevor and the two soldiers who were quickly on the scene and saved his life. Heroes.

Another race to take place was the Durham City 5 and 10km races, an event which has some undulation to keep runners interested but nothing too bad! Some excellent running from all of our athletes in both the 5 and 10km, Andrew Bainbridge taking 1st place in the MV40 category in the 5km while Ally Heslop took 3rd in the ladies F40 race.

Steve Wilkinson and Nicky Young were back at it again this weekend, this time at the Northumberland Coastal Run, a 14 mile run which goes through an area of natural beauty along the Northumberland coastal path from Beadnell Harbour to Alnmouth Estuary, keeping as close to the coast as possible. The race itself starts on sand, then onto road, sand, trail, road and finishes on sand at Alnmouth.

Hilary trail was our only runner at the Dalesrunner 30 race this weekend, a race which takes runners from Muker, up to the Tan Hill Inn, and up tortuous Swinner Gill. This 20 mile race with over 3,000ft of elevation is a tough one for all levels of runner. Hilary finished the race in 5hrs 11 minutes. Great work Hilary!
