How do I?….

Race Results

Saturday saw a small number of our athletes at the North East Counties Indoor Championships at Gateshead.

Tomas Cowell won the U13 Boys North East Indoor Shot Put with a winning throw of 8.76m which not only earned him a new Personal best but is also a club record (don’t forget to let our records team know!). Thomas Hill was also in action in the same event throwing 7m 15 for 3rd in the U15 event and followed this up with a 2.31m in the pole vault.

Tomos standing tall and proud…so tall the cameraman missed the top of his head!!

Elizabeth Clay clocked a speedy 8.58 seconds in the 60m sprint achieving a personal best in first the heat then the final while Krista Bisset-Brown threw 6.52m in the U17 shot put, jumped 1.31m in the high jump and 4.32m in the long jump. Well done all of you, all terrific performances!

Saturday also saw the return of the Royal Signal relays at Hetton Country Park an event which has teams of 4/6 (age and gender dependent) running 2 loops of a 1.12mile (approx) loop with a couple of climbs on the course. For the Senior leagues Amy Pickworth was first up in the 4 woman team finishing in 14.33 followed by Mia Wetherill (14.00), Macy Kelly (14.03) and Marissa Boon (14.59) to finish 9th overall. When teams include the likes of GB’s Laura Weightman who finished her leg in 11.01, 9th place is an excellent result in a very large field.

Barry Talman clearly enjoyed his effort!

In the mens race it was John Clifford who once again got the team off to a flyer finishing in 11.26 followed by Simon Rogers (13.02), Barry Talman who had not trained for 3 weeks leading up to the event due to a chest injury, (13.41), Karl Hume (13.40), Paul Cook (12.52) and Colin Taylor who despite doing his best to avoid the finish line in 12.42.

These times earned the boys 3rd V40 team despite 50% of the team actually being V50 runners and a very respectable 19th out of all Senior and V40 teams as a whole.

A Piece of History

I came a cross a couple of photographs of our former European Silver medalist Joy Greaveson this week…..from a photographer in Australia of all places. These photographs were taken at the White City Stadium in 1964 and if you look closely on the left photograph you will see the old club DH badge. These photographs have been purchased and will be framed and added to the collection of Joy’s medals and memorabilia when they arrive.

If anyone wants to read some of the clubs history or feels they can add content then please click here
