Every now and then, we get an update from endurance coach, Bernadette Caygill, on how some of her junior protégés have been doing. We thought you might like to know in a bit more detail how they’ve been getting on over the last month or so. Here goes…..
“Just some fantastic results from our endurance lot at the North Eastern Championships. Firstly, Adam Russell winning the u15 boys 1500m in what was a fantastic race and an amazing time of 4.24.5. He has only been running since January so to win the North Easterns against extremely tough competition is pretty fantastic! Also you may/may not know he actually got disqualified from his first ever 1500m race for the club at the Kieran Maxwell event for stepping onto the inside of the track. He ran 4.34 in this race – so he totally put this disappointment behind him. His twin, John Russell, finished in an also impressive 5th. The u17 boys, Dan Boyer and Liam Brittle also both ran great PB’s in the 1500m (Dan 4.24.4, Liam 4.29.3). The competition in this age group is unbelievable and Dan has since gone on to better this time at the last NEYDL where he ran 4.20.8. Liam also ran a PB at this NEYDL in the 800m, 2.08.4.
Back to the North Easterns, Dan’s brother, Alex Boyer, came 4th in the u13 boys 1500m in 4.57.3 – and he is only 10!! Also, Dan Richardson came 3rd in the u13 boys 800m and Libby Hammond came 5th in the u13 girls 800m with a great PB of 2.39.49 – again she is only 10! Catherine Roberts was 1st in the u17 3000m in 10.27; she was disappointed with her time as she ran 10.13 at the Kieran Maxwell event (her first attempt at the distance and well within the English Schools qualifying time), but conditions were very hot at the North Easterns for this event. Emma Hart was 3rd in the same event.
Also a special mention for Mia Wetherill, who has just moved into the u15 age group – so far this season she has continually achieved PB’s in the 1500m and 800m, getting her 1500m time down from 5.48 to 5.12, and her 800m time down from 2.55 to 2.33. She is still only 12 and has also enjoyed a couple of wins at the NYSD events. Definitely one to watch!!
Anyway this is just a whirlwind update of some of the standout performances so far. Oh yes, in the schools 1500m race with Daniel Richardson and Dylan Wilson – they both ran fantastic PB’s of 4.54 and 4.57, so along with Alex Boyer that’s 3 of the u13 boys ducking under that 5min barrier.”
