Last weekend three young Harriers competed at the first meeting of the all new North East Youth Indoor Series; Hugo Douglas-Reeves and Oscar Fluen in the Year 6 boys category, and Isabelle Wright in the Year 7 girls. It was an exciting day of indoor action with some tough competition to contend with, but our talented trio performed admirably.
Hugo won the 60m Hurdles in a time of 11.2s, just ahead of Oscar in 11.22s with a photo finish at the line! It was the first time either of them had competed in a hurdles race, so what a way to start. Hugo also won the 140m sprint in 22.36s and came 2nd in the long jump with an excellent PB of 4.13m (1st was 4.16m, so just 3cm in it!). Oscar only did the hurdles so no more results for him. Isabelle came 3rd in the 60m sprint with a time of 9.23s, followed by a fabulous 1st place in the 140m long sprint in 22.81s. She completed her three events finishing 12th in the long jump with a best of 3.11m.
So at the end of the first meeting, Hugo stands in top place for Year 6 boys on 26 points, with Oscar lying in 4th place on 7 points. Isabelle finished the event in 6th place for Year 7 girls with a total of 14 points. As a team, our young Harrier Heroes hoisted DHAC into 6th place overall with 47 points on the board. Well done to all three, you have done yourself and your club proud.
It was a fantastic start to this new series; a very well organised and exciting competition. So if you’re in Year 5, 6 or 7 why not join Hugo, Oscar and Isabelle at the next meeting on 25th January, and see if we can get Darlington Harriers further up that leader board.
