Caedmon School, Whitby played host to hundreds of athletes, from Under 11 to Over 70, for the second meeting of the 2018/2019 NYSD Cross Country series. The weather was a huge improvement on the opening meet at Acklam a few weeks ago, and as usual, there were plenty of our juniors doing their stuff.
Under 11 Boys It was a real family affair for the Campbell-Critchley’s; whilst Mum and Dad competed in the senior events, brothers Sonny and Luca were back in action for the Under 11 Boys. Sonny had an excellent run, coming home in 12th place, crossing the line in 5:31. It was great to see Sonny’s younger brother, Luca, back again after his debut run at Acklam. Another great effort from Luca finishing in 16th place in an excellent time of 8:03. A fantastic effort boys, well done!
Under 11 Girls Four of our junior Harriers were in action for the Under 11 Girls. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were shared by the same three athletes as the last meeting at Acklam, and once again our very own Zara Jones was amongst them. This time it was an excellent 3rd place for Zara in a time of 4:29, just a couple of seconds off 2nd place. Next up was Sophie Bannister; this was Sophie’s first outing this season, and what an impressive start she had. She crossed the line in a fantastic 6th place in a time of 4:53. Not far behind in 9th and 10th place were Savannah Tarn and Lottie Graves. It was a close run thing with only 3 seconds between them; Savannah crossed the line in 5:03, and Lottie in 5:06. Well done to all four girls, a tremendous effort.
Under 13 Boys There were four Under 13 Boys in action from our junior camp today, and three of them finished virtually together in 4th, 5th and 6th place. The first of them was Elwood Kelley after another fantastic run. Elwood’s had an excellent start to his cross country season which continued today; he crossed the line in an impressive time of 12:23. Hot on his heels was Louis Brett in 5th place with only 3 seconds between himself and Elwood; an excellent time of 12:26 from Louis….and it was just another 9 seconds before our next junior Harrier crossed the line; a tremendous effort from Josh Scott, finishing in 6th place in a time of 12:35. Next up was NYSD regular, Ashton Harrison. It was another solid performance from Ashton crossing the line in 16th place, in an excellent time of 13:08. Well done to all four, a great team effort. And with the top 3 counting towards the team event, Darlington Harriers finishedin 2nd place! Top running boys!
Under 13 Girls Having only just joined the club last summer, it was great to see Sophia Hill take part in her first NYSD cross country run…..and what a start she’s had. Sophia crossed the line in a very impressive 4th place, with an equally impressive time of 12:59. Darlington Harriers were in the points again as they took 9th and 10th place. It was Tori Buckley who finished in 9th place, in an excellent time of 13:48, made even more impressive as she’d played a tough game of football for Darlington FC Junior Girls just the day before! Also impressive, was Libby Hammond, who’d only just returned from holidaying in Dubai! Obviously couldn’t wait to get back to her running; an excellent 10th place for Libby in a time of 14:08. A fantastic team performance from the girls meant they also took 2nd place in the team event. Great effort girls, well done
Under 15 Boys There were just the two Under 15 Boys from DHAC today; twins Adam and John Russell. Both boys are on top form at the moment, and yet again they produced another impressive performance. It was Adam who was the first of them to cross the finish line in 2nd place, in an excellent time of 15:01, just 6 seconds behind the winner. John wasn’t far behind, finishing in 5th place; a great time too of 15:25. Looks like it’s going to be another excellent cross country season for the boys. Well done to both!
Under 15 Girls Just the one Under 15 Girl this week, Mia Wetherill. Plenty of drama here but unfortunately it didn’t have the outcome we wanted. She ran a great race, and was in a comfortable 4th place throughout, but then she took a wrong turning so missed out a small part of the course, and unfortunately Mia was disqualified. DHAC appealed against the decision which was turned down. Rather harsh we think, but a great effort, Mia, we’re sure you’ll come back stronger than ever next time
Under 17 Girls There were no Under 17 Boys from our juniors today, so it’s straight on to the Under 17 Girls who, once again, ran with the Senior Women. After a sterling effort, the first of them to cross the line was Megan Noble. From a large field of 125 athletes, Megan finished 25th overall, which was a very impressive 3rd place for her age group. She completed the circuit in an excellent time of 24:55. And it was great to see Millie Grayson back in action after her NYSD debut at Acklam last month. She pulled off another impressive performance and was the 5th Under 17 to cross the line, in a time of 27:44. Well done girls, a fantasticeffort from both!
All in all, an excellent day’s work from our junior Harriers. With a great show of strength and determination you have, once again, done yourselves and your club proud…..so give yourself a big pat on the back! ☺ We hope to see you all back again for the next round at Preston Park, Stockton on the 18th November. #UTH!
Huge thanks go out to Karen Harland for her photos. You can see plenty more from the day’s event by clicking here
