Weekly Round-up 8th September

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process.

Race Result

In a weekend full of racing, the Vale of York Half Marathon, the fast, flat, PB-loving half marathon in aid of Sue Ryder was back for it’s 10th year! A race which start and finish just outside Wistow, and run on scenic closed roads south of York and north of Selby is perfect for all levels of ability. Trevor Mitchell was our only competitor in the event with many others choosing the other ‘small northern’ event instead. Trevor finished his half in 1:48:29 but sadly the race photographer didn’t make the start line! Well done Trevor.

The Great North Run events occupied most of the action this weekend with the junior race and 5km taking place on the Saturday and the Great North Run Half Marathon on the Sunday. Some tremendous efforts from our runners with podium finishers in the junior race, Nathan Price picking up a PB in the 5km and lots of PB performances in the HM event on the Sunday.

Well done to all of our runners who competed in one of the events this weekend and apologies any club members not listed below who may have signed up as unaffiliated!

Steve Wilkinson, Nicky Young and Shirley Gibson were three of our athletes who headed to  Tholthorpe in North Yorkshire, a popular race, starting and finishing alongside the village pond, with the course running along quiet North Yorkshire country roads. The course is reasonably flat so attracts runners of all abilities. Lovebirds Steve and Nicky ran this one together in 49:33 with Shirley 2nd F70 in 60:31. Well done all of you.

Darren Stockdale was another of our senior athletes in action this weekend, this time at the Derwentwater Trail Challenge, 15km. Starting and finishing at Fitz Park, in Keswick, the 15km Derwentwater Trail Challenge circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Derwentwater, the surrounding peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra and the northern fells. Underfoot conditions are generally good for those used to trail running so be prepared if you are new to this type of race in future events. Darren finished this 15km challenge in just under the 2hr mark for 152nd place. Well done Darren!

Hilary Bevan was in action at the DalesRunner 30 this weekend, a circular, fully marked route ascending almost 3,000ft from Swaledale up to the Tan Hill Inn. This route takes athletes on the Coast to Coast path to the tiny hamlet of Ravenseat before heading up and across some of the country’s remotest expanses of moorland to reach the Tan Hill Inn. This is a tough event which Hilary dug deep to finish in 5:11:04. Great effort Hilary, got the job done!
