Weekly Round-up w/e 4th August

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process.

Race Result

It was the return of the home town races this weekend as the Darlington 3km and 10km races descended on the town. After some really good, warm weather over the last few weeks it was expected that the day may have a negative impact on the runners but the morning was kind providing some much needed light rain and cool air. Our junior athletes dominated the age groups with impressive results from our youngest athlete Dylan Owen 8 to our junior 14 year old runners. Fantastic to see so many talented athletes coming through the club, well done to each and every one. A selection of photos below, all media can be found on the clubs social media pages.

In the Senior race we had 59 of our athletes in action on the two lap course. Was great to see so many club runners wearing their vests on the hometown race and some exceptional results along the way. Lee Johnson was once again first home for the club, John Clifford was 2nd V50, Daniel I’anson 2nd Junior on his 10km debut, Louise Talman 1st F40, Val Clarke 1st F65, Jo Scott 2nd F60, Emma Morley 3rd F60, Catherine Anderson 3rd F65, Shirley Gibson 2nd F75 and Laurie Cummings 1st V80 at the young age of 83! lots of PB’s from our runners on the day and some fine performances from runners who have been out of action for a while.

Other runners not included in the list of club runners included Will Seekins (39:06), Emma Jane (46:18) Davis, Natalie Hiles (48:07) and Mark Leslie (46:59).

Taking place on the same day was the York 10km, a race which takes athletes through the city starting and finishing outside the racecourse. Two of our runners, Sarah and Dave Tomlinson were running for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in memory of their colleague James. Dave was first of the two to finish in 46:04 with wife Sarah 38 seconds over the hour mark running with friends.. Laura Ripley was next to finish, crossing the line in 61:43 while team mate Lauren Bewick finished her run in 92:56. Well done ladies…..and Dave of course 😉

Not sure whats going on in this photo Dave…has he stolen a child??
