Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club? Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.
Get Involved
We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.
In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH
Race Result
On Good Friday we had a number of our athletes in action at the New Marske 5mile, a flat and fast race which takes place on the sea front. Good Friday was formerly the Mermaid 10km race but due to restrictions in the housing estate where the race used to start this is now a 5miler. Some excellent performances amongst the finishers, Michael Harcourt taking top honours with a new PB of 27:42 in 9th ahead of ‘granite’ John Clifford who is heading in the right direction again with his training in 12th. Andrew Bainbridge ran an excellent 29:14 for a huge PB while the old stalwart Simon ‘robocop knee’ also ran an excellent 30:38 to announce that he was back on the scene.
Steve Wilkinson ran a strong race in 54th place despite posing for photographs from his adorning fans, ahead of the youngster Jeff Miller who is still one of the best performing V60’s around. Stephen Dent who will be joining the V60 brigade in the next 12mths finished 69th (the magic number) while Sue Phillips finished 92nd for quite some time.
A number of our runners are involved in marathons in the next few weeks so this was the perfect opportunity to get their legs turning over but without overcooking it! These include Louise and Barry Talman (both 33:28), Dave Tomlinson (34:08), Brian Thompson (43:30), and Pauline (35:46) and Ian Brown (35:31) who all ran excellent races, Pauline and Louise picking up age graded prizes too! Shirley Gibson finished her 5miles in 46:37 ahead of Emma Arrowsmith in 62:44 and Lauren Bewick in 75mins dead. Terrific performances by you all.
