Weekly Round-Up w/e 17th March

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process)

Race Result

Trevor Mitchell was our only runner at the Vale of York 10mile race at the weekend. This flat and fast 10 mile race is a great race to get some speed in your legs and aim for a new personal best. Trevor finished his 10mile race in 80mins and 1 second. Good work Trevor.

Elsewhere, Andrew Bainbridge headed North to the Carlisle 10k and helped himself to a new personal best in the process as he finished 10th (4th V40) in 37:25. Results for this event can be found here

At Thirsk in the 10m race we only had two runners, a huge drop off of numbers at this very popular event. Stephen Gardner was our first runner home crossing the line 309th in 1:27:17 with regular Thirsk competitor Graham Bell 364th in 1:33:04. Well done gents!! Full results can be found here

Another event to take place at the weekend was the Locke Park 10 and 20 mile races. These multi lap races can be mentally tough as well as physically tough so congrats to everyone who took on the challenge. In the 10m race Andrew Glencross finished 13th in 1:26:44 with Iain Girard 23rd in 1:34:01. Shirley Gibson another regular at this event finished 26th in 1:37:57 while Julie Price finished in 1:53:10.

In the 20mile even it was Ian Brown who was first home finishing in 2:34:17 ahead of wife Pauline in 31st in 2:39:58. Linda Noble was next home in 2:53:09 while my hero of the day was Brian Thompson who sacked it off after 16 laps….probably suffering from dizziness or boredom! great effort Brian and to our three finishers.

Sunday saw the club supporting events at Croft Circuit with a range of races from 5km to marathon. We had competitors in the 5km race, Kyle Sridhar taking 4th place ahead of Matthew Foster in 18:24/18:56 but 3rd and 4th in their categories respectively with Ellie Howarth 21st and 4th in the senior women race. Trevor Mitchell was the only half marathon entrant from the club finishing 54th in 1:49:11. Paul Gilsenan was 7th in the 20mile race in 2:08:14, Louise and Barry Talman running together finished their 20miles in 2:31:07/08 while Catherine Anderson and Phil Doonan followed suit running the course together in 3:14:53/55. Well done all who ran and who supported on the day.
