Round up, w/e 19th January

Welcome to Darlington Harriers Weekly Round-up Report, keep reading to see what has occurred this week and what is coming up for club members.

How do I?…

Our club was formed in 1891, but how did the club become Darlington Harriers? Who were the people that founded the club?  Read about some of the great athletes that have graced our club, Olympians George Butterfield, Robert Hawkey and Joy Grieveson. Read about Fred Wyers who competed in the 1958 Commonwealth Games and other notable athletes such as Bob Stockdale, William Wylie, Ian Barnes, Paul Harker, Lewis Moses, Kieran Maxwell who have graced our club over the years and let’s not forget all the current members. The club is steeped in the town’s history from basic beginnings to current day and these pages will be updated daily as I trawl through the British Newspaper Archives.

Get Involved

We want to see the club colours at all of our events, especially team events such as relays, National, Northern or North-Eastern where we can get together as a group, support each other and make these events a social occasion. So let me introduce you to our Senior Club Captains.

In addition to athletes, we are always looking for volunteers to support club and local events so please reach out to Sarah Johnson as your first point of contact if you can support in any way shape or form. Thank you! #UTH

Don’t forget you can support the club by registering for the easyfundraising app and helping the club raise money. This is simple to do, download the App, link to the club then clicking on the easyfundaising app prior to making your online purchases (It’s only one additional step in the process.

Race Result

Jamie Baldasera accompanied with his two friends were in action at the Hardmoors 30. The Hardmoors 30 is a 30ish miles route from Robin Hood’s Bay passing through Ravenscar, Hayburn Wyke, Crookness and Scalby Mills on the edge of Scarborough taking in both the Cliff top paths of the  Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track. On the day the boys, finishing together crossed the line in 7hours and 40 mins. Top work boys.

Will Seekins was in action at the Montane Spine race, a gruelling 46miles, along the Pennine Way in our harsh winter weather. The weather on this weekend was horrendous with heavy snow fall making this accomplishment even greater. I doth my cap to you! Over 14 hours of effort!

The 6th Senior Birtley XC Relays took place on January 12th at Lord Lawson, incorporating the NECAA Cross Country Relay Champs as well as the NEMAA Open Cross Country Relay Champs Relays. We had 3 teams competing on the day. Rory Hart, Aidan Colmer and Michael Harcourt finished an excellent 3rd in the senior race while the ladies team of Bernadette Caygill, Naomi Hall and Amy Pickworth finished 9th in their race. Simon Rogers, Jamie Callaghan and Alistair Hart went one place better finishing 8th in the M45 race. Great work all.

The Newcastle 10k course takes in the famous landmarks of the Newcastle Quayside passing the Swing Bridge and under High Level Bridge, Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, King Edward VII Bridge & Redheugh Bridge, before returning the same way. The race is split into an A & B race on the day, Matthew Foster running in the A race achieved a new PB of 36:21 on the day, while Natalie Hiles did the same in the B race in 46:22. Barry Foster’s 44:34 was his fastest for a few years and Sarah Dent, running under another runners number, also knocked nearly 5 minutes off her previous PB and went under the 1 hour mark for the first time, running 59:32. Well done guys.

The Brass Monkey once again proved to be a popular hit with those runners looking for a potential PB or solid run out on the flat and fast York course. With excellent conditions, the day did not disappoint, with many of our runners achieving personal bests or close to. Tim Taylor was first of the Harriers to finish in a time of 1:14:25 with John Clifford achieving a 1st place age category win. Ed Lamb broke his PB and 80 minutes in the process with Helen Stephenson smashing her time by 5 minutes. Lots of great performances throughout the senior group.

Paul Allan was our only competitor at the Chevron Houston Marathon this weekend despite girlfriend Abbie’s desperate attempts to be a Harrier 😉 The race start features five corrals with the first corral starting at 6:55 a.m. (early start….) Corrals B, C, D, and E will follow A Corral using a pulsed start method – with time intervals separating each corral – to reduce course congestion.  The course is flat and fast so fast times are always a possibility. Paul didn’t disappoint with a 2:38:59 and although not the time he hoped for, a fantastic time and achievement and one he should be proud of…..although those arm guards and Newcastle United football shirt you’ve been wearing less so 😉 In all seriousness, amazing running Paul.
