This year we were fortunate to have the Northern Junior Championships being held just up the road in Middlesbrough. A great opportunity for our junior athletes to compete with the best in the Northern region, which includes some of the top young athletes in the country.
Events were spread over the whole weekend and the recent wet weather largely stayed away, despite a few showers on Saturday. It remained gusty all weekend, but the general consensus was that Sunday was the better day for competing.
We managed three bronze medals over the weekend and many athletes achieved PB’s, or got very close to PB’s which was just as impressive in the conditions. I’m sure they will all benefit from the experience of a Championship setting.

Excellent work all round, with special congratulations to our three medalists – Hugo Douglas-Reeves taking a Bronze medal in the 80m Hurdles, with the top 3 separated by just 0.04 seconds! Izzy Edinboro also came away with Bronze in the 300m with 2 very consistent races, producing a slightly faster time in the final when it mattered! And Thomas Hill, producing an equal PB of 3.70m in the Pole Vault for the Bronze (three good attempts at 3.80m too).
We also saw seven PB’s and one club record across the weekend, showing a number of athletes peaking at the right time!
Upcoming events in August include NEGP #6 on Wednesday (16th August) at Jarrow, a NECAA Open meeting at Shildon next weekend (20th August), England Athletics U15 & U17 T&F Championships in Birmingham (26th & 27th August), Harriers Monthly Mile at South Park (Re- scheduled to 24th August), Tartan GamesGateshead (27th August) and NYMAC 1 Mile Relays (31st August).
