NEYDL – Fixture Four – 16th July 2023 – Whitley Bay

Our junior athletes along with supporters, volunteers and officials headed to a very windy Whitley Bay on Sunday 16th July for the fourth and final fixture of the NEYDL Division One season, alongside teammates from Allerton Juniors Athletics Club. The blustery weather wasn’t conducive for fast times or big throws and jumps, but everyone battled hard for every last available point in the conditions. We did well to avoid any rain, so it could have been worse!

Massive well done and thanks to our officials on the day, Sarah JohnsonBrian BurdonBrian Thompson, Mia Wetherill, Gillian Buckley, Trevor McDermot and Linda McDermot – without the team of volunteer officials, these fixtures would not be able to go ahead.

Provisional results have the DHAC/AJAC team finishing second for the 4th time this season with 619 points, behind Harrogate who scored 775 points. A great effort from everyone, ending a very consistent season behind eventual winners Harrogate, who made it a clean sweep of 4 victories.

In total DHAC had 33 athletes competing in 60 different events during the day.

U17 Boys

An amazing effort from our 4 boys to cover 8 events. Thomas Hill, Owen Ovens and Jack Wood all took part in 3 events, with Ashton Harrison in his farewell NEYDL appearance covering Hammer and Shot. Thomas and Owen also managed to run legs in the relay at the end of day. Great effort lads!

Thomas took his customary 1st place in the Pole Vault needing to clear 3.50m, a winning margin of 70cm. He also jumped out to a new PB of 5.53m in the Long Jump for 2nd place, proving it doesn’t matter whether the jump is vertical or horizontal for him!

Ashton bowed out in style with a new PB of 9.43m in the Shot for 2nd place and also achieved 22.13m in the Hammer. Ashton has taken part in every possible NEYDL since being an U13 and we’ll miss him next season, wishing him all the best in Senior League action.

U17 Girls

We had Libby Hammond and Tori Buckley also making their last appearances for the club in NEYDL competition. Joining Ashton as ever presents since being in the U13 age group. All the best girls, we look forward to keeping an eye on your progress as U20/Seniors!

The 6 competing U17 girls signed off the season with some great performances. 3 wins, 4 seconds and 2 third place finishes secured some vital points for the team.

Jess Sweet (13:07/27.50) and Libby Hammond (13:13/27.70) made it a Darlington sprint 1-2 in both the 100m and 200m races. Libby’s 13.13 was enough to earn her a PB in her final youth league appearance! Jess also got over the 10m mark in Triple Jump to take 2nd place. In the Long Jump, Libby achieved 4.36m.

Tori made it a hattrick of PB’s from our trio of NEYDL leavers, getting hers in the 300m as she finished 3rd (45.22). Tori also left on a winning note, dominating the Javelin with 29.83m and still found time to run the 300m Hurdles and Relay!

Savannah Tarn and Freya Talman covered the middle distance events in very windy conditions, with Savannah (47:46/2:31.90) running 300m as the B runner and also managing 800m 3rd place, with Freya (5:16.4) taking 4th in the 1500m. Fleur Liddle completed the team with 15.87 in the 100m and 5.21m in the Shot.

Congratulations to all of our junior athletes, coaches, team managers, officials and parents that have contributed to another successful season! We’ll lose a few of our experienced U17 athletes next season and we wish them all the best for the future, but I’m sure we’ll see some new U13 competitors step up to fill the void!

I hope everyone has enjoyed themselves over the season and we look forward to trying to catch Harrogate next year!
