News in brief

LIAM STEPS IT UP A GEAR….. Under 17 endurance maestro, Liam Brittle, has his mind focused on a Durham Schools competition on June 9th where he will be taking part in a steeplechase. Although he’s been training for the event throughout the winter months, he’d never actually competed in a steeplechase so was desperate for the experience. His mum came to the rescue and put a shout out on Facebook for anyone who knew of any events before the up and coming one for Durham Schools. Thanks to the wonders of social media, two kind ladies from Gateshead got in touch offering Liam the opportunity to run 2nd claim for Gateshead Harriers in a YDL competition at Trafford Park. As you would expect he jumped at the chance (no pun intended!!) and came 2nd out of the five taking part with a fantastic time of 5:01.76. He is now ranked 1st in the North East, and 20th in England! He also bettered the current club record by 11 seconds! Great work, Liam, and the best of luck for June 9th.

CHAMPION PERFORMANCE FROM HARRIET…..Under 15 Junior Harrier, Harriet Rogers is just as fast in the pool as she is on the track! Also a member of Darlington Swimming Club, she recently took part in the 2018 Regional Swimming Championships, where she won gold in both the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly, as well as taking bronze in the 100m freestyle. All three times should qualify her for the British Championships in July. Congratulations, Harriet, can’t wait to hear how you get on!
