Sunday saw the annual Great North Run take place, a race which two of our club members (Paul Kelly and Harry Singh) have ran since it’s introduction in 1981, an amazing feat!
This event attracts tens of thousands of competitors, many of whom raise thousands of pounds for their chosen charity and sees runners making the trip from Newcastle to the coast at South Shields.
Some fantastic performances again from club members starting with Louise Talman who qualified to feature in the Elite ladies race. Starting with world class athletes who’re able to run around 5 minute mile pace for the duration can make for a lonely road ahead. I’m sure it was worth it though just for the opportunity to mingle with stars of the sport!
In addition to many first time half marathon runners and personal bests achieved on the day, Paul Allan stormed into the top 50 finishing in 71:55 in a race where Sir Mo Farah took the tape in a little over 59 minutes.
John Clifford, his 48 years of age making no difference to his speed and strength as he finished in 1:14:28 for 70th position. Regardless of time or position, an excellent achievement to finish such a gruelling run amongst a large field, congratulations all!
