Top Team Spirit From Juniors
We’re now in that transition period between the end of the Track & Field season and the start of the Cross Country season, and you’ve probably heard about the various relay events on offer. Just recently we reported on the NYMAC relays at Stewart Park; the annual Thirsk Flatts relays have just taken place this weekend, and last weekend, three of our junior teams headed to Manchester for one of the North’s biggest relay events. Hosted by Northern Athletics, their Autumn Road Relays attracted over 350 teams from the North of England, including our U13 Boys, U13 Girls and U17 Boys. Here’s how things went for our DHAC teams…..
Under 13 Boys Three of our regulars made up a strong U13 Boys Team; Harry Lyons, Elwood Kelley and Louis Brett. Harry got the team off to a good start running the first 3.4k lap in an excellent time of 12:44 and crossing the line in a healthy 10th place before handing over to Elwood. Elwood put in another strong run for the boys, just slipping back a place to 11th by the end of the second lap; another impressive lap time 13:25. Louis set off at a blistering pace for the third and final lap running an excellent anchor leg. By the time he crossed the finish line he’d managed to gain a place, with a lap time of 13:28 bringing the boys home in a fantastic 10th place out of 34. A tremendous result boys, well done!
Under 13 Girls The girls put together another strong team in the form of Tori Buckley, Savannah Tarn and Libby Hammond. As with the boys, it was a 3.4k lap for each of the girls. Tori ran a great first leg but was up against some really high ranking competition; she gave it her all and completed her lap in 34th place in a time of 15:00 exactly. Savannah took over and ran a cracking second leg; although her time was just a couple of seconds faster than Tori’s, she managed to gain an incredible 10 places moving DHAC up to 24th place! There was more tough competition for Libby in the final leg but she dug deep and managed to maintain 24th place as she crossed the line in 15:22. A fantastic effort from all, well done girls!
Under 17 Boys With three of our top athletes making up the U17 boys team, there was a chance that Daniel Boyer, John Russell and Adam Russell could come home with a medal today. Dan got the boys off to a cracking start; up against 37 top teams he soon polished off the 3.7k lap in a tremendous time of 11:52, setting the boys up in 6th place. Now the race was on! John took over and worked relentlessly to get closer to that medal position, which he did, gaining two places before completing his lap in 12:04, the 5th fastest over stage 2. So it was down to Adam, he started off in 4th place, looking strong and a definite medal contender. He pushed hard and managed to gain that all important place, finally crossing the line in a fantastic 3rd place to take the bronze medal. His time was an impressive 11:48, the 4th fastest over the final stage. Amazing work boys, well done!
