We love to hear about our Junior Harriers excelling outside the field of athletics, so when we were told about Hugo Douglas-Reeves and Alex Boyer doing so well at the Northumberland and Durham County Swimming Championships recently, we just had to let you know. They both competed in a number of events for Darlington Swimming Club and both did amazingly well against the best age group swimmers across the two counties. Their success highlights their true versatility as athletes.
Hugo swam in the age 10/11 group. Many of the boys he swam against were in Year 6, so as a Year 5 competitor he did remarkably well. Hugo qualified for 12 out of the 14 events available, exceeding challenging qualifying times. He decided to compete in 10 events across all strokes and won gold in the 100m breaststroke, and silver in both 50m and. 200m breaststroke.
Alex swam in the age 12 category. He qualified for 12 out of 17 events, again exceeding qualifying times set by the region and decided to enter 7 events including both sprint and long distance. Alex won gold in the 800m and 1500m freestyle and silver in the 400m freestyle.
Two incredibly talented young men, we’re sure you’ll agree. If you know of any of our Junior Harriers with ‘another string to their bow,’ then we’d love to hear about them
