And So It Begins..

Gateshead’s Indoor Series got off to an explosive start with an exciting evening of track and field athletics last week. Four of our juniors were in action; three on the track – Kate Bower, Darcey Garbutt, and stepping out for the first time as an U15 athlete, Kate Williams; and two in the shot – Rosie Thompson and, also moving up to U15, Lily Thompson.

U15 Girls 60m Hurdles First up was Darcy Garbutt. As quick as ever out of the blocks it was a close race all the way. In the end Darcey was just pipped at the post, finishingin 2nd place in a time of 9.85s, just 0.1s behindthe winner! Fantastic effort, Darcey, well done!
U15 Girls 60m Out of the four heats, our two DHAC girls had been drawn together. So eager to get a great start, Kate, unfortunately stumbled out of the blocks and was playing catch up for the rest of the race. In the end though, our two girls crossed the line in 1st and 2nd place! Darcey had an excellent run and finished in an impressive 8.19s, and hot on her tail was Kate finishing in 8.50s. Top running girls, well done!
U17/U20 Women 60m In a mixed age group race of U17’s and U20’, Kate Bower stepped out for the first time as an Under 20 athlete. In what turned out to be a very close race she finished in 6th place, equallingher indoorPB of 8.74s. Great effort, Kate, well done.

U15 Girls Shot As mentioned this was Lily Thompson’s first outing as an U15 athlete, which also meant an increase in shot weight, now up to 3kg. Her best on the night was an impressive 9.34m, which was a new PB for that weight. This was enough for 2nd place so a great start to being Under 15. Excellent stuff, Lily, well done!
U17 Women Shot For Lily’s older sister, Rosie Thompson, this was the start of her second year as an Under 17; it’s also her GCSE year so they will have to take precedence this season. It also means that both girls will be throwing the same weight shot this year so there will be some interesting times ahead! Rosie also finished in 2nd place after throwing an excellent 9.93m which she was very happy with. Keep up the good work Rosie, well done!
An excellent start to the indoor season for Darlington Harriers. Well done to all who took part.
