You will have seen that our Track will be unavailable to train on as it undergoes a full refurbishment from March 13th. Work has actually already started with the lighting in and around the athletics track. We expect the work to happen over a 12 week period so should be complete by the end of May, if not sooner!

Week 1 our track has been removed, improved lighting at the track has been installed and the death trap long jump cover gone
Week 2, Kerbing is getting done and a new pathway is going in to the hammer/discus area

The Training page on the website continues to be updated to reflect any temporary arrangements, but if you have any questions at all on the sessions below, please speak directly with your coach

You will have seen that the membership renewals have now gone out and Tom has communicated with you all about how to renew these. Our Track with new facilities should be complete by the end of May and we should all see the benefit of having a new track and structure of the complex moving forward. We are looking at the cost for track membership to ensure we remain competitive and still offer excellent value for money with new higher tariffs imposed on the club. These higher costs will also ensure that the track is maintained and cleaned to ensure we have the best track around for at least the next 20 years and with security fencing around the track and no football on the centre pitch we are confident that this will be great news for Darlington Harriers now and in the future. As a reminder OF THE KEY DATES from Tom;

  • 1st April – England Athletics will mark all memberships for renewal – COMPLETED
  • 2nd April – DHAC will email out a payment link from EA to renew. You have until 1st May to complete payment (reminder emails may be sent during this time). Your payment amount will be based on your existing membership unless you advise otherwise.
  • 30th April – Final reminder sent to all members yet to make payment
  • 2nd May – Members that did not renew will be marked as such, and their accounts will be resigned from the club on both the EA portal and the club website

After the 2nd May 2023, you are free to re-join at any time by reapplying via https://darlingtonharriers.com/join/

Thank you to everyone in advance for (hopefully) making this as seamless as possible, but if you have any questions at all, please drop a message to 07458 125 721 via WhatsApp/SMS.

We had some of our club runners in action at the Darlington Trail, Locomotion 5km run. This local series takes in some of the local trail paths for a bit of on your doorstep action. On the night it was young Matthew Foster who took the win in 20:39 on a course which was more than the standard 5km distance. Photos from the nights run can be found here with race results on the Darlington Trail facebook page. Photo of Neil Chalmers in his Harrier kit.

Mark Haymer stepped up the distance this weekend to take on the Kielder Ultra 51mile race and despite it being April Fools day…51miles is no joke! The route pretty much takes in the whole of the Kielder Water and Forest Park which spans 600 square kilometres and is home to the largest forest in England as well as being the largest man-made lake in northern Europe. The area features mile upon mile of purpose-built trails including forest walks, woodland single-track and heather clad moorland so plenty of interest for the competitors on the way round. With three options of distance on the day (Falcon 32km, Goshawk 50km or the Osprey 82km) Mark took the plunge for the biggest distance completing the course in 9hrs 24 to finish 10th overall and 3rd in his age category. Tremendous achievement Mark.

Saturday night also saw the Children With Cancer Charity night which was arranged by some of the senior runners competing in marathons this year to raise funds for one of the many excellent worthwhile causes out there. All money hasn’t been added to their fundraising page but the team fully expect to surpass £6,000 on the back of their efforts. Thank you to everyone from the club who supported in some way.

Mark Tallon was in officiating duty this weekend at the Northern 12 & 6 stage road relays and young athletes 5km. Although the club didn’t have any teams competing it’s great to see club members giving support to other local events. Results from the event can be found here

It was the return of the clubs South Park 20 miler this weekend, a race which is set within a few weeks of Spring marathon season to enable athletes to prepare for the big day. As always the event was excellently marshalled with Trevor and Linda McDermot at the helm with military like precision. A huge thanks to all of the runners and volunteers who made the event possible your efforts are always appreciated by the club and those runners wanting to compete.

Results have yet to be released (these will be on our results page when complete) but in the interim here’s a few photos of the day including a “What’s Iain Girard about to say” competition…answers on a postcard please! Chris Fothergill finished 2nd on the day and a huge shout out to Julie Price who completed her longest run ever by completing the course.

Nicky Young was in London this weekend for the Landmarks half marathon supported by ‘Hollywood’ Wilkinson, a race which starts by The Strand, finishes by Downing Street and has fabulous views of London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Tower of London and the London Eye. What more could you possibly want! Nicky made her way around the course in 1hr 51.58 which is a great result especially when chased by a giant M as per the photo below. Results can be found here

Libby Hammond was our only athlete in action at Liverpool Harriers & AC Open Meeting at Wavertre, Liverpool on Sunday competing both in the 200m and 100m. Libby finished in third place with times of 27.51 and 13.29 respectively. Official results have yet to be released but will be available here.
