Track Development – Progress in Pictures

You will have seen that our Track will be unavailable to train on as it undergoes a full refurbishment from March 13th. Work has actually already started with the lighting in and around the athletics track. We expect the work to happen over a 12 week period so should be complete by the end of May, if not sooner!

Race Result

Tuesday saw the return of the Locke Parke Pie & Peas 5mile race. This park although scenic is a little twisty in places so can be difficult to build up a rhythm but is still a good race to run…and the pie and peas post race is worth the entry alone! Gareth Kyle minced his way to 6th place while Brian Thompson steaked a claim for top 60 as he finished in 56th position on the multi lap course. Well done boys!

Barry Bell, Anne Hutchinson and Julie Price took on the first Rob Burrow’s Leeds Marathon. a race which starts and finishes at Headingly Stadium. The race was organised for former rugby league star Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019 and has raised millions of pounds for the condition and it was great to see so many runners supporting this new event. This is not a flat and fast marathon, the course is undulating with some tough climbs and the weather was unkind to the runners as temperatures reached 21 degrees. Barry was first of our three finishers in 4:04:14 with Anne Hutchinson crossing in 5:14:48. First timer Julie Price who hadn’t even ran 20 miles until South Park 20 in early April finished in a superb 5:53:52. All three of you should be extremely proud of yourselves.

Steve Wilkinson and Nicky Young were in competitive action again this weekend this time at the at Ravenscar Half Marathon. The event starts from Ravenscar Village Hall situated 700 feet above sea level, overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors National Park and midway between Whitby and Scarborough. The route descends the coastal path along the sea cliffs on an undulating route to the finish back in Ravenscar.

Steve had a good run finishing 9thin 1:53:56 with Nicky 56th in 2:26:28 in a field of 122. Steve commented that although he was happy with the top 10 finish he was more disappointed that there were no photographs of him taken. Don’t worry Steve, i’ve put the feelers out to the guys in Fleet street to see if they could help with locating a photo of you both and they have come up trumps. Full results can be found here

Amy Pickworth was back in action at the Lakeland Trails event, the Staveley 10km a race which starts and finishes at Staveley Recreation Ground. The trails climb out from Staveley above the Kentmere valley, before returning along the valley itself past idyllic tarns and through ancient woodland, climbing Reston Scar before the descent back into Staveley village. Underfoot conditions are quite variable and there’s a bit of everything for athletes. Short sections of tarmac, grassy footpaths, stony bridleways with some stiles to climb over near the end. On the day Amy was 2nd lady home in 59:46 and 1st FV40
