Easter saw the return of Elswick Harriers’ ever popular event, the ‘Good Friday Road Relays’ held at Lemington on, as you would expect, Good Friday. The main relay events are for the Seniors only, but they are preceded by a series of individual junior events; combined boys and girls races for each of the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 age groups.
Three of our Junior Harriers were in action, and as usual they gave it maximum effort to produce some impressive performances.
Under 11’s It’s been a fantastic season for our young cross country hero, Alex Boyer. He’s dominated the NYSD series, finishing 1st overall, and had numerous other runs for club and County which couldn’t fail to impress.
Today he added another victory to his ever growing list by finishing 1st out of the 34 taking part, completing the 1.16 miles run in 6:16 – 8 seconds clear of his nearest rival. Superb result, Alex, well done!
Under 15’s After his excellent result at Wednesday night’s charity run, Alex’s big brother Dan was in action again here. He produced yet another top performance up against some strong competition from the bigger clubs, finishing the 1.6 miles circuit in 6th place. Dan crossed the line in a rather impressive time of 8:25; great effort, Dan, well done!
Senior Women Junior Harrier, Catherine Roberts, stepped up to help out the seniors once more for the relay event. She joined forces with Junior Coach, Bernadette Caygill and Natalie Curgennen to form one of the 114 teams of 3 taking part. Catherine took on the first of the three 2 mile legs and had an absolute storming run, bringing the girls home in 3rd place with an impressive time of 12:48! Natalie took over for the second leg with a great run managing to maintain 3rd position, before Bernadette completed with a strong anchor leg in 13:10, and finished the race in 3rd place! A tremendous performance from the girls only beaten by the ‘big guns’ of Gateshead and Morpeth….. and a super fast time from Catherine; as Bernadette said afterwards “she was our stick of dynamite today!”
A great show of strength! Well done to all taking part today #UTH!
