Juniors Run At National Finals

Taking part in any National Finals competition is an achievement in itself, but that is exactly what three of our Junior Harriers did last weekend. Representing the club at the Under 15 and Under 17 National Track & Field Finals were endurance supremo, India Pentland, and two of our fastest sprinters, Charlotte Rutter and Darcey Garbutt.

India has had a fantastic track & field season with a host of successful events along the way. She has continually improved as the season’s progressed which has resulted in a UK ranking of 3rd in the 1500m and 10th in the 800m. Quite amazing! Today, India ended the season in style winning her first National T&F medal! She ran a tremendous race in the 1500m finishing in 2nd place, just a couple of seconds behind the winner, crossing the line in 4:32.35. Well done, India, a fantastic way to finish the season. Well deserved!

Charlotte Rutter was another of our young athletes to be finishing the season on a high. She’s had an excellent year, both indoors and outdoors in this, her second year at Under 15. I’m sure she’ll agree that her highlight was finishing 6th in the final of the 75m Hurdles at the English Schools National Finals. It was that same event Charlotte was competing in today. She had a fantastic start, finishing 2nd in her heat, crossing the line in 11.71s. Up against some tough competition in the final, things couldn’t have been closer, with all athletes crossing the line within 0.68 seconds of each other! Charlotte finished an excellent 5th place in a time of 11.60s – what a race. Well done, Charlotte, a fantastic effort!

Still in her first year at Under 15, Darcey Garbutt was here more for the experience today. Another one of our young athletes who has already competed at the English Schools National Finals this year, she was back again here to take part in the 100m sprint. As with Charlotte’s final, Darcey’s heat was another close run thing with only one second between 1st and 8th place! She ran a great race finishing in 7th place, crossing the line in 13.01s. Well done, Darcey, a great experience, and one I’m sure you’ll take with you into next season!
A great end to a busy season for all three young athletes. Congratulations to all!
