History

This is a timeline of our great clubs history dating all the way back to 1891. We have had many fantastic athletes, coaches, volunteers and people at our club over the years and continue to do so today.

This site is to capture specific moments of history, newspaper clippings, key moments or achievements. Any information which is incorrect including dates or if you have additional information (or anything we can add to the site) please contact us through the clubs contact us pages, all information would be gratefully received.

LINDSAY DUNN 1943-2020

Lindsay’s athletic career began with Darlington Harriers but he soon moved to Gateshead and became a county championship standard athlete himself.  Whilst living in Leeds he started his coaching career, taking Brendan Foster (who was at Carnegie College at the time) to a bronze medal in the 1970 Commonwealth Games 1500. As a competitor Lindsay was a member of the powerful Gateshead squad in the seventies and early eighties. What can be said about Ian Barnes that hasn’t been written before. Ian who didn’t start running until his 40’s and still running into his 80’s was crowned European Indoor 1500m champion as V60, competed in World Championships, represented England broke national records (2 of which he still holds of time of writing November 2017) and represented Northumberland and Durham over many years. Trio win Silver at NECCA North East XC Masters

Trio win Silver at NECCA North East XC Masters

Thirty eight teams took part in this years North East XC Masters race, a race which took place at Thornley Hall Farm, Peterlee.  The race covers a 3km route across cross country terrain and this year due to the dry conditions the ground was very hard underfoot with lots of ‘ankle breaking’ divets around the course.  The team of John Clifford (10.37) 6th fastest overall, Paul Cook (11.00) 16th fastest and Wes Tarn (10.16) 2nd fastest, fired their way round to second place and a silver medal in a very tight contest with Sunderland clear winners but with a late..Read More

Barnes gain National V85 3000m title

Ian Barnes both broke the national V85 3000m record at todays NEGP Fixture at Jarrow finishing in 16.34.42
