Darlington Duo Head Indoors

With the Cross Country season now in full flow, for those who want to continue with their track and field events, and stay warm and dry in the process, there’s always the option to move indoors. And that’s exactly what two of our Junior Harriers did last weekend, when they travelled to the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, for the Northern Athletics Open Indoor Meeting. Under 15, Darcey Garbutt and Under 17, Liam Brittle flew the flag for Darlington Harriers as they took on some of the country’s best.

Under 15 60m You may have noticed the heading here isn’t “Under 15 Girls.” That’s because these heats were mixed gender; so not only was Darcey in Heat 1, traditionally the fastest heat, she was the only girl in her race! So she was really up against it. But Darcey didn’t let that put her off; she just focussed on her own race, did what she does best and showed the lads how it’s done. Only one of them managed to get the better of her as she flew across the line in 2nd place, in an excellent 8.31s. A fantastic performance, Darcey, well done!

Under 15 Girls Long Jump Darcey was back in action in the long jump, with just the girls to contend with this time. They were split into two groups, A and B, with Group A being the stronger of the two, with athletes having the better PB’s; Darcey was in Group A with 14 other girls. There was some excellent jumping from all the girls including another fine performance from Darcey, whose best jump on the day was 4.52m, which was enough to take 3rd place. A great effort, Darcey, well done!

Men’s 2000m Liam Brittle took on the adults in the Men’s 2000m with ages ranging from Under 17 (Liam and one other), Under 20, Under 23 and then Veterans up to the V55 age category! They were split into two Heats, with Liam being placed in the fastest of the two, Heat 1. Strictly speaking, it was a mixed gender race but the only female was in Heat 2. Liam ran an excellent race, very composed, and finished an impressive 4th place in his heat, and 4th overall, in a time of 6:24.58. This may well be a club record, but Liam is just waiting to have it confirmed! Well done, Liam, great effort!
