You will have seen that our Track will be unavailable to train on as it undergoes a full refurbishment from March 13th. Work has actually already started with the lighting in and around the athletics track. We expect the work to happen over a 12 week period so should be complete by the end of May, if not sooner!

The Training page on the website will soon be updated to reflect any temporary arrangements, but if you have any questions at all on the sessions below, please speak directly with your coach

Saturday saw some of our junior athletes in action at the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, in the grounds of Prestwold Hall, Loughborough. Marissa Boon finished in 59th place in the U20’s race while Macy Kelly ran well finishing in 146th position in the U17’s race. Zara Jones finished first point scorer for the North East U15 girls in 49th place while Savannah Tarn crossed the finish line in 221st place. Rowan Steel was 2nd point scorer in the U13 boys race in 40th place while Finn Pentland-Rice finished 4th point scorer in 104th place despite losing both his shoes within a few 100 metres of the start. Matthew Foster was just behind Finn in 109th. Well done all of you, great to see you represent the club, North East and more importantly yourselves.

We had some of our junior athletes competing at the Birtley Relays 3 stage cross country relays. The team of Jame I’anson, Lucas Rogers and Matthew Foster finished 1st on the day in the boys race while the second team of Daniel Callaghan, Donovan Tarn and George Togher also impressed finishing in 5th place. Well done all of you!

It’s gold for James, Matthew and Lucas

The girls team of Matilda Owens, Sasha Patterson and Charlotte Owens also put in an excellent performance, finishing on the podium in 3rd place after keeping North Shields Poly at bay. Excellent running by all of our juniors.

John Clifford was our only competitor at the Chester 10km this weekend, competing in the English Masters race. John, who’s achievements have been very well documented finished his race in 34:25 for 47th place overall and 2nd MV50. Incredible running again John.

Sunday saw the return of Thirsk 10, a fairly flat and fast 10mile race with a dog leg out and back across farmers waste land after 4 miles before heading back to Thirsk racecourse for a grandstand type finish. Some good performances right through the field starting with Paul Allan who was first home for the club, who finished 44th in 59:09 and Paul Gilsenan who just missed out on a sub 60 in his first 10miler. Some podium finishes despite there being no V’5′ sections apart from V35 including Louise Talman who was 2nd FV40 in 134th place, Jeff Miller 149th but 1st MV60, Ian Brown 226th and 3rd MV60 with Shirley Gibson 3rd FV70.

NB Peter Armstrong missing from the results but ran around 68:49

Sunday also saw three of our Manchester and London marathon runners head to Lancaster for a 20 mile warm up event, Trimpell 20. This event takes runners on a kind of out and back route which allows runners the chance to practice their race strategies. These three lads have really been putting the hard miles in over several months now so big things are expected of them at their respective marathons. Of the three, Gareth Kyle, competing for the club in his first race was first home finishing in an excellent 34th place in a well paced 2hrs 10.27 while Andrew Bainbridge and Jake Brown ran the course together in 2hrs 15.12 crossing the finish line in a way that bring back memories of Brokeback Mountain. But in all seriousness, excellent running by the trio and i’m sure this will pay off in April.

Jake, Andy, Gareth and Rory (Rory finished 12th in 2.03)

Hugo Douglas-Reeves was in action this weekend at Sheffield’s Institute of sport at the England Athletics U17 & U15 Indoor Combined Event Championships. After strong performances in the 60m hurdles (9.45 secs), long (5.24m) and high jump (1.50m), shot putt (9.55m) and 800m (2.24.01) Hugo amassed 2324 points which was good enough for a Bronze medal with a 40pt lead over 4th. Great work Hugo!
